William is a Germanic name meaning “Determined Protector” or “Guardian” (much like its derivative Liam). It derives from “wil” (strong will of protection) and “helm” (a helmet), and is one of the most popular boys’ names of all time. The Old German name of Wilhelm literally translates into “Resolute Protector/Strong-Willed, Vehement Warrior.” The English/Anglo Saxon meaning is “With Gilded Helmet.” The name William was first introduced to England by William the Conqueror in 1000 AD.
